We are...

Traditional Values and Our Clans

ValuesWe are the Taa'tl'aa Denae' (Headwater People) of Chistochina and Mentasta, Alaska. Our culture is rooted in thousands of years of tradition, family, and cooperation. Our lives are lived according to unwritten Indian laws and values learned as children.

Our Elders

We depend on our elders as links to our rich heritage. We look to them for advice and knowledge about traditional ways and values based on a life closely tied to the land. With the guidance and wisdom of our Elders, Tribal relations will remain strong and our relationship with the land will be preserved.

ClansOur Language

Our language, Athna Athabascan, was developed over thousands of years and has been passed on by oral tradition. It is the link to our past that helps us maintain the knowledge of who are as a people, a sense of our place in the world, and a deeper understanding of our origin. Preservation of Ahtna Athabascan will ensure that we can pass on traditional culture and Tribal identity to our many grandchildren.

Tribal Leaders

Tribal leaders serve our people by protecting Tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and traditional use of our land. Their work to preserve our unwritten Tribal laws and values empowers our people and ensures a healthier and more positive future for our children, our grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
